Learning to overeat may start in infancy

Researchers at Brigham Young University  have released a study that suggests overeating in infancy can lead to obesity later in life.

Sociology professors Ben Gibbs and Renata Forste found that forcing  babies to finish their bottles may not be a good thing.

The study says “If you are overweight at age two, it puts you on a trajectory where you are likely to be overweight into middle childhood and adolescence and as an adult,” said Forste. “That’s a big concern.”

Interestingly, I just had a chat with someone about our satiety sensors (feeling full) and how as kids we have it, but lose it as we age.

Yet its true, we do sometimes tend to force kids to clear their plate or try to bribe them to eat more, if we feel they haven’t had enough.

They know better than we do!

And the study goes on to say ” putting babies to bed with a bottle increased the risk of childhood obesity by 36 percent. And introducing solid foods too soon – before four months of age – increased a child’s risk of obesity by 40 percent.”

Interesting.
